Adoption or Birth of Child

FMLA: You may be eligible to take FMLA for childbirth or the placement for adoption of a child in your home. Leave may be taken at one time or intermittently. See FMLA in Section IV.

Disability Leave: If you are away from work due to pregnancy, you are covered under Carnegie Mellon's Short-Term Disability program. STD provides replacement income for a maximum of 25 weeks (following a one-week waiting period); Long-Term Disability begins thereafter. See Disability Leave of Absence in Section IV.

Paid Time Off: PTO days will count toward FMLA leave. See FMLA in Section IV.

You can add your new dependent to your health coverage within 31 days of the child's birth or placement in the home for adoption. Contact the Benefits Office for details.

You may want to contribute to a Dependent Care Reimbursement Account to pay for child care expenses on a before-tax basis. Contact the Benefits Office.

Carnegie Mellon offers a variety of child care benefits to employees:

  • Enrollment at the Children's School
  • Assistance in finding child care through the Child Care Partnerships Referral Service
  • Care for your mildly ill child at the Get Well Room
  • Dependent Care Reimbursement Account to pay for child care expenses on a before-tax basis.

Career Advancement

Personal Leave: During your career, it may be necessary to take time off to pursue educational opportunities. Learn more about Personal Leave in Section IV.

Paid Time Off can be taken in half-day increments to accommodate any of your needs away from work. See Paid Time Off in Section IV.

Tuition benefits allow you to pursue educational opportunities at Carnegie Mellon--either through a program or on your own--or at another institution. See Tuition Benefit Programs in Section V.

Child Goes to College

Paid Time Off can be taken in half-day increments to accommodate any of your needs away from work. See Paid Time Off in Section IV.

Benefits Coverage: You may continue coverage for dependent children up to age 23 if they are full-time students. Verification of student status is required each semester. See your benefits Summary Plan Description for details.

Tuition Benefits help pay the cost of secondary education--at Carnegie Mellon or another institution--for dependent children of employees with at least five years of continuous service. See Tuition Benefit Programs in Section V.

Difficulty adjusting to an empty nest, or is your child struggling in college? The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you or your child. The service is available to employees and immediate family members at no charge. See Employee Assistance Program in Section V.

Death

Bereavement Leave: You are eligible to take bereavement leave for the death of a spouse, registered domestic partner, or family member. See Bereavement Leave in Section IV.

Divorce

 

Within 31 days of the divorce, you should: elect new coverage if necessary, remove your ex-spouse from your existing coverage, and add your children as dependents on your coverage if necessary. Contact the Benefits Office for details.

Domestic Partner

 

A new partner may mean changes to your life insurance and retirement plan beneficiaries. Contact the Benefits Office for details.

You can add your domestic partner to your health coverage within 31 days of meeting the criteria for registering a domestic partner relationship. Contact the Benefits Office for details.

Flexible Work Arrangements

Holidays: Carnegie Mellon extends to full-time employees 12 paid holidays, including three floating holidays that can be scheduled to accommodate your personal choice (with manager approval). See Paid Time Off in section IV.

Paid Time Off can be taken in half-day increments to accommodate any of your needs away from work: illness, personal time or vacation. See Paid Time Off in Section IV.

Marriage
