The University Police Department provides round-the-clock police and security services to the university community. Suspected thefts and lost keys should be reported to University Police immediately at x8-2323. If you find yourself locked out of your work area, call University Police for assistance at x8-6232. Walking escorts provided by student volunteers are available from 10:00 pm - 2:00 a.m. daily during the regular academic year by calling (412) 268-SAFE.
University Police also provide a lost-and-found service between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you find keys, a wallet, or other valuables, turn them in at the University Police station on South Craig Street or at the Information Desk at the University Center.
Emergency phones located around campus will put you in direct contact with the University Police Department dispatcher without dialing.
They are housed in bright yellow telephone boxes labeled "Emergency" or on blue light emergency phone poles.
There are security guards on duty at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) 24 hours a day, every day of the year, available by calling the SEI security desk at x8-5172. There are also security guards on duty at the Mellon Institute from 7:00a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, available by calling the MI security desk at x8-7849.

The parking permit year runs from September to August. Parking fees may be paid by payroll deduction, cash, check, MasterCard or Visa for the school year. Staff who pay for parking via payroll deduction have the option to reduce their tax liability and increase their take-home pay by having their pay reduced by the amount of their parking fees before taxes are deducted.

The University Postal Service processes all incoming and outgoing U.S. Postal Service mail and campus mail. The Post Office sells stamps and money orders, and provides for box rentals. Additionally, the Post Office offers UPS, Postal Express, Global Priority, Registered Mail, Certified, Insured and International mailing services. These services are offered only on a cash or check basis (with proper identification). In addition to regular U.S. mail service, the Post Office provides campus mail service at no charge. Campus mail taken to the post office before 8:30 a.m. or deposited in a campus mailbox the night before should be delivered within one day. Pickup and delivery for both campus and U.S. mail are provided once each working day to all departments. Mail sent via campus mail should be addressed with the individual's name, department name, and building.

Three retail stores are located in the University Center: Entropy, a convenience store with a self-service coffee bar, groceries, frozen foods, snacks, candy, ice cream, soda, dairy products, health and beauty items; the Bookstore, which carries a variety of trade and technical reference books, an assortment of sportswear, required textbooks for all university courses, gift items, stationery, classroom supplies, writing instruments, greeting cards, dorm life accessories, calendars and posters; and the Art Store, which offers a wide selection of art and engineering supplies, photographic materials, architectural supplies, technical equipment, reference books, batteries and film.
For your convenience, the retail stores accept cash, check, Plaid Cash, and MasterCard and Visa. Store hours are established to meet the needs and requirements of the students. Computing Services develops, maintains and supports the computing, media technology and telecommunications resources for the students, faculty and staff of Carnegie Mellon University. The division maintains the campus wired and wireless network, public computer clusters, and a computer repair shop. They are also responsible for system software development, cable TV services, telephone services, and the installation and maintenance of audio/video equipment in most of the academic classrooms. In addition, the division supports campus administrative systems such as the Student Information System (SIS), Talent Management System (TMS) and Human Resources Information System (HRIS).

Cluster Services provides 400 UNIX, Macintosh, and IBM-compatible computers in seven public computer labs known as “clusters.” Most clusters are open 24 hours per day when classes are in session and have a consultant on duty to answer basic computing questions. In conjunction with the College of Fine Arts, Cluster Services also operates the Multimedia Studio located in the College of Fine Arts building. The Multimedia Studio provides students with the multimedia digital equipment for digital video, animation, and computer modeling, digital imaging, digital sound recording, music composition, and large format color printing.

The Computer Maintenance Group offers repair services for a wide range of products including those sold through the University Store, located in the University Center. They provide authorized warranty service on Apple, Dell, and IBM/Lenovo products. These services are available to any member of the university community. Other services include pick-up and delivery to academic buildings on the Pittsburgh campus, shipping equipment to the manufacturer, backup of hard drives, upgrades, equipment evaluation and extended warranty contracts. You can pay for repairs by check, cash, departmental charge, Master Card or Visa.

Network Services provides computing and communications capability to every office, classroom and residence hall on the Pittsburgh campus. Services include wired and wireless networking, network activations, troubleshooting network connectivity problems and maintaining the network database.
The Carnegie Mellon network allows you to access electronic mail and bulletin boards, printers, Internet resources like the World Wide Web, Cameo (the University Libraries' on-line catalog and user services resource), on-line help and many other applications and services. You can use a third party broad band services to access the network from off-campus locations.

Software Licensing services include purchasing software for Computing Services' cluster computers, licensing UNIX software for the university's Andrew computer system, and negotiating software licenses. Clusters obtain software that supports a variety of courses; departments and interdepartmental programs purchase software for specific courses. Thus, the software collection in Computing Services' clusters includes productivity tools such as word processing, spreadsheet, general-purpose graphics software and cross-curricular software such as statistics packages, symbolic computation software and utilities.
The Applications Software group acts as a central point of information for campus software licenses, both those negotiated by Computing Services and those obtained by other campus groups, colleges and departments. Site licensed software is generally available for download via the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal. The campus University Store also carries various software titles at a discount.

The Carnegie Mellon University Federal Credit Union is a non-profit, member-owned financial institution available to all employees of Carnegie Mellon, affiliated groups and their families. Because the Credit Union is non-profit and member-owned, money made in excess of expenses is returned to the membership through competitive loan rates and savings dividends.

Human Resources produces the Faculty/Staff Directory annually, distributing a printed copy to all regular, full- and part-time employees each December. The directory is also available via the Web to anyone with an Andrew user ID and password. The ID+ is the official photo identification card for students, faculty, and staff of Carnegie Mellon. All faculty and staff members are encouraged to obtain their ID+ Card from the Carnegie Mellon Card Office, located in Warner Hall A-15. Additional information about the ID+ and its benefits is available on the ID+ Website, www.cmu.edu/idplus.
In addition to serving as your campus identification card, the ID+ grants you after hours access to academic buildings, access to athletic events and facilities, free transportation on the Port Authority Transit (PAT) system, provided you are benefits eligible, and borrowing privileges at the University Libraries. Additionally, your ID+ can be used to authorize campus printing.

Faculty and staff members are eligible to sign up for PlaidCa$h, the university stored-value debit program. With PlaidCa$h, you never need to worry about carrying cash. PlaidCa$h is accepted at many locations on and off campus. PlaidCa$h can also be used to make copies at the various copy centers across campus. (Note: PlaidCa$h has replaced CampusXpress)Your ID+ Card is a necessity of every day campus life and PlaidCa$h is the way to pay! So remember to carry your ID+ Card with you at all times.
Upon termination of employment at Carnegie Mellon, staff and faculty members are required to return their ID+ Card to their supervisor. Lost, stolen or missing ID+ Cards should be reported immediately to the Carnegie Mellon Card Office. For a replacement card, visit the Carnegie Mellon Card Office. The cost of a replacement card is $15.00.
An Affiliate ID Card is issued to a person (typically a spouse, domestic partner, dependent child or visitor) sponsored by a Carnegie Mellon employee or department. A $15.00 processing fee is due when an application is submitted.

Because the university offers many benefits through a plan governed by Internal Revenue regulations, you can only enroll or change your benefits under certain circumstances. For example, you must enroll in health care benefits within 31 days of becoming eligible. Likewise, changes in your personal circumstances or employment status may affect your benefit needs and coverage.
Contact the HR Service Center if your marital status changes, you gain or lose a dependent, your dependent reaches age 19 or 23, or you or your spouse change employment since you will have only 31 days following one of these life or status events to change your benefits. If you do not change your benefits within the 31 day period, you will not be able to make a change until the next annual Open Enrollment period. The University Libraries acquire materials and online resources specifically to support teaching and research at Carnegie Mellon. Librarians meet with classes and provide expert one-on-one information services for students, faculty and staff at the university.
Electronic course reserves, databases, and journals make it possible for you to access information at any hour without even setting foot in a library building. Many library services, such as reference, circulation and interlibrary loan, are also available online. Login with your Andrew ID or, if you are off campus, use remote access through the university’s VPN ( Virtual Private Network). However, keep in mind that many useful materials are available only in the library.

Computing Services distributes the Cursor newsletter to full-time faculty and staff on an as-needed basis. Cursor is one venue to inform the campus community of Computing Services projects, services and products. News items are also communicated through bboards (e.g., official.computing-news), mailing lists and the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal (http://my.cmu.edu/). FOCUS is a publication of the faculty and staff of Carnegie Mellon and is published seven times per year. It is distributed via campus mail and is also published online at www.cmu.edu/focus/. It contains news stories, feature articles, profiles of campus personalities and other stories exploring issues of interest. Many of the articles in FOCUS express the opinions of individual members of the Carnegie Mellon community.
The Internal Communications Department in the University Advancement Division publishes and distributes the 8-1/2 x 11 News every Thursday. Its purpose is to provide quick, no-frills information about campus research, news and events. News briefs, personal mentions and calendar highlights are weekly components of the newsletter.

University Advancement’s Media Relations Department compiles and publishes Carnegie Mellon’s annual rankings according to publications such as U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, BusinessWeek and Fortune magazines, The Wall Street Journal and The Princeton Review. The Tartan is Carnegie Mellon’s student-run newspaper, which highlights campus news, athletic events, editorials, lectures, seminars and meetings, cultural events, and other university activities. The Tartan is published weekly during the academic year and is distributed in most university buildings on campus. The Tartan is also published online at http://www.thetartan.org/.
The Carnegie Pulse is Carnegie Mellon’s student-operated online news source and features campus and community news. You can access The Carnegie Pulse at www.tcpulse.com/.
Human Resources produces two publications. HR Solutions and Connections is produced each semester. It is a resource for all employees to help them understand the policies of the university, gain new insights to improve their work performance, become more familiar with the benefits available to them, and help them grow personally and professionally. Each issue of HR Solutions and Connections includes a Manager’s Corner that addresses issues of special interest to those who supervise others. Human Resources also publishes the Benefits Bulletin. This bimonthly publication provides benefits information and updates to help people better understand and utilize the benefits available to them.
Staff Council serves as the voice for staff at Carnegie Mellon University through policy advocacy and community involvement, providing a system that enables staff to realize their full potential and impact their quality of life.
