Human Resources Employee Module (HREM)
When people are hired at Carnegie Mellon, their appointment information, along with the people's demographic information, is entered into the Human Resources Employee Module (HREM). All university-paid faculty, staff and student employees (graduate and undergraduate) have records in HRIS, as do courtesy employees. (Courtesy employees are people who have some affiliation with the university but are not paid.)
It is very important that the data in HREM be entered promptly (before their start date) and correctly. In essence, a person does not officially exist at Carnegie Mellon until their appointment has been entered and approved in HRIS. Data integrity is extremely important, as the data in HREM is used by many other entities throughout campus for many purposes:
- Human Resources: Web/paper phone directories; university reporting within Carnegie Mellon and to outside agencies
- Benefits: Benefit/insurance enrollment and changes; Benefits tracking; Leave of Absence and Termination tracking; Employee orientation
- ADP (Automatic Data Processing): Pay for faculty, staff and students
- Payroll: W-2 mailing; I-9 processing
- Enrollment Services: Financial aid; Student appointment tracking
- University Printing: Mailing labels to home and campus
- Planning Services: Faculty and staff data tracking and reporting
- Other Purposes: Parking permits, University ID card
