Job Classification Codes and Pay Scales
Carnegie Mellon's classification structure provides a framework for organizing staff positions at the university. Positions with similar qualifications, requirements and levels of responsibility are grouped together in pay grades which create a classification structure.

Job classifications show:
- Title and Job Class Code
- Pay Grade and Fair Labor Standards Act status (exempt/non-exempt)
- education, experience, skills and abilities
- typical functions and responsibilities
- accountability, direction, decisions and supervision needed
The majority of staff positions at Carnegie Mellon have been assigned a particular classification through the job analysis process. However, not all staff positions are classified. Due to the assignment of unique responsibilities, certain positions fall outside of the classification structure.
A job classification should not be confused with a Staff Employment Opportunities job posting.
