Paid Time Off
Beginning with the first day of the month coinciding with or following their date of employment, and on the first day of each month thereafter, full-time staff members earn Paid Time Off (PTO). An employee must be actively at work (not on leave of absence) to earn PTO. The amount of PTO earned is based on years of service at Carnegie Mellon according to the schedule below.

Except in the case of illness or emergency, PTO days must be scheduled in advance and approved by a manager. PTO days may be taken for vacation, personal time, illness or time off to care for dependents. Holidays, jury duty and bereavement leave are provided under separate policies and do not count as PTO days.
Managers or their designeers can keep track of the employees' PTO usage, using the PTO Tracking Worksheet (.xls). Guidelines and details about PTO eligibility may be found in the Paid Time Off Guidelines (.pdf). See also the Paid Time Off and Holidays page in this site.
For information about Paid Holidays and Floating Holidays (including how many floating holidays a newly hired employee gets, based on their date of hire), see the Holidays and Paid Time Off page.
