Advertisement Language

Your ad may contain whatever language you feel is appropriate to describe the job and entice the best candidates to join our team. Keep the following pointers in mind as you write your ad:

  1. Sell Carnegie Mellon and your department. Think like a job seeker when writing your ad. The university brand includes the phrase "Combining arts and technology to create innovation with impact."
  2. Use a descriptive Position Title. The title is the first thing a job seeker sees about your job.
  3. Include an accurate and complete Position Summary. Be clear and honest about the job responsibilities so that people with the right skills and expectations apply.
  4. Include the required experience and skills. See the position description for consistency.
  5. Be consistent with the Position Description. There should never be contradictory information between the ad and the PD. If there is, then either the ad or the PD is not accurately describing the position.
  6. Make it easy to read. Use capital/lower case letters, punctuation, paragraph breaks and bulleted lists.
  7. Never use discriminatory words or expressions, such as he, young, attractive etc.
  8. Your ad should address: position summary, minimum and preferred qualifications, other information about the position, how to apply (online), and that we are an EOE/AA employer.
  9. Always include the following application instructions as the last item in the ad:
Candidates interested in joining the Carnegie Mellon team should go to http://hr.web.cmu.edu/prospective to create an applicant profile and apply online. Hard copy/emailed resumes cannot be accepted. Individuals without access to an Internet-capable computer can use computers at libraries, internet cafes, local or state employment offices, or the Carnegie Mellon Human Resources office at 143 North Craig Street, Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon University is an EEO/AA employer.
