Temporary Employment Services
The Temporary Employment Service (TES), operated by Carnegie Mellons Human Resources, is dedicated to providing qualified temporary office support staff quickly. TES understands your needs and retains a pool of qualified clerical, secretarial, and administrative staff who are available for full-time or part-time, short- or long-term assignments at the university. If you have any questions about the TES, please contact Pat Schaller, HR Manager - TES, at psch@andrew.cmu.edu or x8-7478.

Frequently Asked Questions
With what computer hardware and software are TES employees generally familiar?
Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, UNIX and Macintosh are frequently used operating systems
on campus. Frequently requested software packages include Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Access; Oracle; Pagemaker and Filemaker Pro.
How long can assignments be?
Assignments vary in length from 1-2 days up to 2-3 months, and occasionally
longer. Some departments hire a temporary employee with the intention of hiring
the employee into regular, full-time employment if it works out well. Your needs
dictate the length of the placement.
How soon will a TES employee be placed?
The skills you request combined with the skills of our temporary employees determine
how quickly we can fill your assignment. In the vast majority of cases, a TES
employee who meets your needs can be placed within 1 week or less. If you will
need a temporary employee with a very specific set of qualifications that may
go beyond basic office skills, we recommend that you send in your request as
soon as you are aware of the need.
Can I hire a TES employee into a regular full-time position?
Many TES employees have transfered to regular full-time positions at the university.
In some cases, the hiring department intended for the position to be temp-to-hire
status. In other cases, the TES employee worked out so well that the department
chose to hire the person into regular employment. However, the temporary employee
must complete the steps of the regular employment process before moving into
a regular staff position.
