University Grievance Procedures and Contacts
Provost Mark Kamlet personally serves as the principal advocate for graduate students in the central administration. It is his responsibility to ensure that issues addressed by the departments, colleges and university are handled fairly and adequately. He encourages graduate students to discuss matters with him that they believe might be inappropriate to raise at the department or college level.
Indira Nair, vice provost for education, Michael Murphy, dean of student affairs, and Paul Fowler, associate dean of student affairs, also meet regularly with graduate students to discuss any issues or concerns they may have.
Students are likewise encouraged to speak directly to their graduate student representatives and to the president of the Graduate Student Assembly. (For more information on what the Graduate Student Assembly does, see its website at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~gsa/.) If you wish to file a formal grievance, refer to the college grievance procedures noted in the section detailing resources at the Program, Department and College Level or consult your department handbook. If a resolution cannot be resolved at the department or college level, an appeal may be made to the provost at the request of one of the parties involved. The provost may handle the case with the advice of others and/or choose to refer the case to a committee.
College, Department and Program Level
Though the procedures for handling graduate student concerns vary greatly from one department to another, graduate students are encouraged to discuss their academic concerns informally within their academic department first. Further information on formal concerns and grievances is available in each department's written handbook. Contact your department's graduate coordinator for more information.
COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS
CFA Grievance Procedure
Student complaints and grievances should first be presented to the faculty member, student advisor, director of graduate studies, or department head, depending on the locus of the complaint. More formal grievances should be brought to the Graduate Studies Committee with the department head as the next arbiter. The head may appoint a separate ad hoc and advisory grievance committee. In cases where the head is party to the complaint, presentation will be directly to the College of Fine Arts dean.College Contacts
