Frequently Asked Questions
Payments and Bills
When will Carnegie Mellon/the institution get its payment?
We process tuition benefit payments after the Carnegie Mellon add/drop dates, so that payments are not improperly disbursed should you make course changes. The Carnegie Mellon Academic Calendar lists the add/drop dates for each semester. If you are attending Carnegie Mellon, the Benefits Office will remit payment directly to The Hub. If you are attending another institution, you will be mailed a check when payments are processed - it is your responsibility to forward the payment to the institution.
What should I do if I get a tuition bill?
If you receive a bill from Carnegie Mellon, just notify The HUB that a tuition benefit payment is forthcoming. For courses at another institution, Carnegie Mellon will mail you a check for your eligible tuition assistance, made payable to the other institution. It is your responsibility to give this check to the school you are attending. If you have already paid the charges, ask the other institution for a refund in the amount of Carnegie Mellon's payment.
Application and Eligibility
When must I sign up for tuition benefits?
You must submit the forms (signed by your supervisor) at least 2 weeks prior to the beginning of classes for every semester in which you plan to take classes.
What if I leave the university or become ineligible for tuition benefits?
Tuition benefits for courses taken at Carnegie Mellon will continue through the end of the current semester, so you may complete your courses. If you are taking courses at another institution, then the tuition assistance must be repaid to the university if you become ineligible for tuition benefits or leave the university mid-semester.
What if the course I want to take is only offered during working hours?
Discuss with your supervisor your desire to take a course during the workday. If the operation of the department will not be adversely affected by your absence, you may be granted permission to work a schedule that allows you to take the course.
Do I need to be enrolled in a degree program to take courses?
No. If you are not enrolled in a formal program at Carnegie Mellon, you should register through The HUB by filling out a Non-Degree Student Registration form (.pdf). To apply to a degree program, contact Undergraduate Admissions or the school (CIT, CFA, SCS, GSIA, H&SS, Heinz or MCS) directly.
