Applying for Tuition Benefits


Taking courses at Carnegie Mellon

  1. Register for the course(s).
    • If you aren't in a formal degree program, register as a Non-Degree Student.
    • Submit registration materials to The HUB by the course registration deadline (deadlines are listed on the Academic Calendar).
  2. Submit your completed Application for Employee Tuition Benefits (.pdf) to Human Resources at least two weeks before the start of classes.
    • A new application is required for EACH semester in which you are requesting benefits.
  3. Carnegie Mellon will remit payment to The HUB on your behalf.
  4. If you receive a tuition bill from Carnegie Mellon, note on the bill that you are an employee receiving tuition benefits and return it to The HUB.
    • Activities fees and transportation fees are waived for employees.
  5. If you decide to drop a course, notify The HUB and Human Resources immediately. If you need to drop a course after the add/drop deadline, you may need special permission from The HUB to be relieved of tuition charges and taxes.

Taking courses at Another Institution

  1. Register for the course(s) according to the institution's registration procedures.
  2. Submit your completed Application for Employee Tuition Benefits (.pdf) to Human Resources at least two weeks before the start of classes.
    • Attach a copy of the course description(s) and the invoice showing tuition charges. Your application will be held until all three pieces are received.
    • A new application is required for EACH semester in which you are requesting benefits.
  3. Carnegie Mellon will mail you a check, made payable to the other institution, for your eligible tuition assistance.
    • It is your responsibility to give this check to the school you are attending.
    • If you have already paid the charges, ask the other institution for a refund in the amount of Carnegie Mellon's payment.
  4. At the end of the course, send a copy of your grade to Human Resources to demonstrate successful completion of the course (a grade of C or better). You will not be eligible for future payments until this is received.
  5. If you decide to drop a course , follow the institution's requirements and also notify Human Resources immediately to make arrangements for repayment of the tuition money. You will not be eligible for future benefits until you either demonstrate successful completion of the course or return the prepayment.
