International Expatriate Benefits

Carnegie Mellon provides benefits for its employees serving in long-term assignments in another country, such as at the Carnegie Mellon Qatar Campus. It covers employees working in a foreign country on Carnegie Mellon business for at least six months (for at least 3 months if one's current medical plan is an HMO). CIEB administers several of our international benefits, including the international:

International employees are eligible to receive many of the same benefits that local employees receive when appropriate, such as the Reimbursement Accounts, retirement contributions, LTD insurance, life insurance, etc. Some benefits that involve local facilities or vendors may not be available to employees outside the Greater Pittsburgh area. In addition, faculty and staff on international assignments may be eligible for special allowances and services to facilitate relocation, such as Visa services, travel allowances, housing allowances and vehicle allowances.

Benefits for Local Hires at Carnegie Mellon University International Locations

Local hires in our international locations are eligible for a different set of benefits than expatriate employees. In addition, local employment law will govern. See the Human Resources/Business Office of your location for more information about the benefits to which you are entitled.

Medical Coverage for International Travelers

In addition to expatriate benefits (for long-term assignments in an international location), Carnegie Mellon provides International Travel Health Insurance Benefits (.pdf) for employees on official Carnegie Mellon business in a foreign country for less than six months (or less than 3 months if your current medical plan is an HMO). It is provided through Aetna Global Benefits WorldTraveler, and is an add-on to your current medical plan at no charge. An individual traveling internationally for Carnegie Mellon business should complete the International Travel Registration Form (.doc) to acquire the Aetna coverage.
