When you log into Highmark's site, you can access numerous information sources, self-evaluations, and health care decision support tools (such as price for procedure guides and hospital surveys).
Blues on Call (1-888-BLUE-428)
This service helps you become more involved in your health care by providing you with up-to-date, easy-to-understand information about medical conditions and treatment options. Registered Nurses are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To access Blues on Call, simply call the toll-free number: 1-888-BLUE-428 (1-888-258-3428). Common reasons people call include: adbominal pain, back or joint pain, skin problems, digestive problems, headaches, vomiting, ears/nose/throat problems, wounds, and weight loss or nutritional counseling.
When you call Blues on Call, you will be connected with a personal Health Coach who can help you determine if symptoms you are experiencing are a cause for concern, explain what you've been told, provide decision support services if you've received a diagnosis, and help you understand/manage a chronic condition and adhere to treatment protocols. Your Health Coach can send you educational materials, such as booklets or video tapes, and refer you to Highmark's online resources, including the Healthwise Knowledgebase
HealthMedia: Personalized Online Lifestyle Improvement Programs
Unhealthy lifestyles are among the leading causes of some of our most deadly diseases - from diabetes and cancer to heart disease. Smoking, poor nutrition, obesity and stress are all serious risk factors. Highmark has partnered with Health Media to develop lifestyle improvement programs. They are all free of charge to members, and provide specific help that is tailored to your circumstances (personalized reports and action plans are developed through completion of surveys and questionairres). - HealthMedia Breathe - smoking cessation. A four-part plan, with a program length based on desired quit date.
- HealthMedia Nourish - nutrition improvement. A four-part program lasting 8 weeks.
- HealthMedia Balance - weight management. A six week weight management and physical activity program.
- HealthMedia Relax - stress management. A five week stress reduction action plan.
- HeathMedia Care - provides confidence, skills, and knowledge to better manage your chronic conditions.

On the UPMC Website you can find such resources as: Health A - Z is an online collection of health materials that UPMC medical experts developed to keep you healthy and more informed about your medical care. Guidelines are available on their site regarding clinical and preventive health. You can also access information about their Case Management Services and Health Management Programs.
Healthy Living Rewards
With this member discount program, just show your member ID card and receive discounts at hundreds of regional businesses that encourage a healthy lifestyle: from gyms, dance or martial arts schools, or sporting goods stores to spas, health food stores or salons.
Health Plan OnLine
UPMC’s Internet-based customer service center gives you 24-hour access to your specific benefit information. Using Member OnLine, you can: locate a participating physician; request a new/replacement member ID card; print a temporary ID card; update your own or your dependents’ contact information; or confirm your benefits, copayments, and eligibility.
Health and Wellness Update
This quarterly member newsletter is mailed to participants and can be downloaded online. It is packed with wellness and plan information. I can be accessed online from their Member News page.
Pediatric Advice Line (PAL)
This service for faculty and staff with children age 18 and younger lets individuals talk to a pediatric professional who can give medical advice, provide routine information about health or development issues in their children, and assess the seriousness of a child's medical probem. PAL is a partnership with the Pediatric Triage and Advice Center of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. UPMC participants will be mailed a letter and magnet with the PAL telephone number. PAL hours are:
8 pm - 6 am, Monday - Thursday
5 pm Friday - 6 am Saturday
12 noon Saturday - 6 am Sunday
12 noon Sunday - 6 am Monday
